If you've been following along with our journey for the last few months I have some specific news! I was able to preach for the folks at First Baptist Church of Farmington, AR this past weekend and following a confirming vote, I accepted the call to become their new Senior Pastor! We experienced such a warm welcome and really enjoyed our long weekend in Northwest Arkansas. We're so excited to make the move and make Farmington our home. First Baptist is a great church with a history of effective ministry and I can't wait to get to work leading the church to build on that legacy and continue making disciples. We will share an update with our Vortex family soon, but our last Sunday with Vortex Church will be June…

For the Joy

General
When I felt called to the ministry I was just 15 years old. At the time I was convinced that it was specific to student ministry and scoffed at the idea of ever becoming a preacher. My Father (Baptist Pastor, now retired), did his best to tell me otherwise, but I was unpersuaded early on. Little did I know... Fast forward a few years and I find myself following that call to planting churches and pastoring, and you guessed it, preaching. And guess what, I love it! I love getting to open the Word, seek God's message and then show others what God has shown me. And I have been able to do it not out of obligation to a job, but for the joy of exposing the life-giving truth of…

An Update on the Journey

General
A couple months back we announced that we were leaving North Carolina with the intentions of moving back to Arkansas and back to pastoring and leading a local church. At that time I sat down with our pastor and recorded an interview where I explained how God had been working in us and revealing next steps to us, along with what we were envisioning for our future. As always, this has been a venture of faith, and while we've sought opportunity, we have also prayed and waited. This process has been so life-giving as friends have reached out to encourage us and we've had the chance to meet some awesome people. We're excited to see God connect us with a great opportunity, and while I will share more about that in another post,…

Comparing Scars

General
If I spent very much time with my buddies when I was a young, it was not uncommon to end up competing over who had the most gruesome scar, and of course, the best accompanying story. One time I was working on my bicycle and had it turned over and sitting on the seat and handlebars. I was adjusting the chain tension and managed to get my index finger between the chain and sprocket as it was moving full speed. That was painful and left a scar you can still see today. Over the years I have concocted some ridiculous stories to accompany that scar---among others. Everything from shark attacks to wrestling alligators in a Florida swamp. None of those stories are true, but they sure are fun. Scars are…

I don’t know.

I don’t know.

General, Ministry, Personal Growth
I don't know. Three words that none of us really love to say. At least not in the areas of life where we are expected to have the answers. I am a confident guy and enjoy having the answers, but sometimes I just don't know. I also think technology has made us lazy in this because we never have to go too long without knowing. We pull out our phones and ask Siri or Google it. Do you know how many points Michael Jordan averaged in his freshman season at the University of North Carolina?  No? It was 13.5 points per game. I know that is fascinating, but I didn't know either so I just looked it up. It took me about five seconds. That stat doesn't matter, and neither do the other mindless…
