But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. (James 1:6 NLT)
Do not waver… If I’m honest this can be a hard one for me. Maybe you too. Asking in faith without wavering. How exactly does one do that?
Here James speaks of divided or wavering loyalty. This isn’t the absence of doubt, it is the absence of secondary dependence. Here he calls the believer to depend on Christ alone!
In our flesh we may at times doubt, but as new creations we will be unable to live there. For me it is never doubt that God will come through, it is fleshly worry that it will not happen in my timing or by my preferred means.
As I have endured, I have found that doubt finds no home in my heart. I’ve just seen God come through too many times. And I’ve never witnessed him failing. Not once. Never. Disappointment is found in placing your dependence anywhere else!
So I can follow him with undivided loyalty. My hope is settled and secure even in the midst of the storm because I serve the unchanging, immovable, creator of all things. To quote the song, Oceans, by Hillsong United, “You’ve never failed and You won’t start now!”
So if you find yourself doubting, check your loyalty. Where are you placing your dependence?
