“For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” (Hebrews 12:11)
Discipline isn’t fun. I know that may seem obvious, but this passage thinks it important enough to point it out. We don’t like discipline, but we like the results. We don’t love denying ourselves a big bowl of ice cream every night, but we enjoy being able to fit into our “skinny jeans.”
The benefits that come from the discipline of fasting makes the process invaluable—It puts the struggle into context. As you set out on this 21 day journey of prayer and fasting, I hope that you will stick to it with the necessary discipline—Not so that you can prove something or brag about your self-control, but because I know that God will use this time to speak to you and to change you. I know that the reward that awaits will be worth it.
