What’s in a name?

For this year’s Christmas series I am revisiting a series I preached about 4 years ago from the book of Isaiah. It is titled, “He Will Be Called…”

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

The first message was Wonderful Counselor. I was teaching the content of the message to my kids as we were taking JL to school yesterday (the woes of being a preacher’s kid). I explained that Isaiah was giving us some of the names of Jesus hundreds of years before he was born. JL and Millie both said they thought his name was Jesus? I explained that his name is Jesus, but these names are who he is.

You see, to my children I am dad or daddy. My name is Cary, but Daddy is who I am to them. They understood this immediately. His name is Jesus, but to you and me he is also our Wonderful Counselor. He is too wonderful for words and perfect in wisdom and he leads and guides us. It is one thing to know his name (Jesus), but it is something more to know him for who he is.

As I explained the Wonderful Counselor to JL, he got it. He said, “If Jesus knows what you need to do, you should ask him.” I said, “What do you after you ask someone a question?” he said, “You be quiet and listen.” I followed up with, “Then what do you do?” He quickly said, “You do what he says!”

I guess maybe it’s not that complicated. Do you know Jesus as the Wonderful Counselor? Do you listen to his voice? Do you you do what he tells you to do?
